In recent years most universities in South Africa introduced online applications. Now new applicants do not need to go to the post office to send their applications; they can do it from the comfort of their homes. This new age state of technology certainly has notable advantages. Unlike before, applicants now track the process of their applications. Prospective students can also change their course of choice mid-application. There is also less paperwork involved, and required documents can be easily identified. The struggling of guessing which documents the university ‘might’ need is eliminated.
University of Witwatersrand (Wits) is one of the prominent universities in Africa. It is not only one of the oldest universities in South Africa, but it is also fast growing. Therefore, it is not surprising that it offers a wide range of courses, from Biology to Anthropology, Theology, Psychology and Biochemistry. From Bachelor of Commerce to Bachelor of Arts, applicants are spoiled for choice. It is also not surprising to learn that most applicants struggle with choosing their desired field of study. Most learners struggle with navigating the intimidating prospectus. Here is a guide on how to use an undergraduate prospectus of Wits.
Wits prospectus guide
Firstly, you need to understand the key elements. You need to know which faculty you qualify for based on the subjects you were doing in high school. For example, a person who did Economics, Accounting and Business Studies are more likely to qualify for courses offered in the faculty of economics and management sciences than they are to qualify in the faculty of natural sciences. You also need to know your APS to determine which courses you qualify for. The APS score is calculated by adding the symbols/levels you obtained for each of your subjects in grade twelve, excluding Life Orientation.
Apart from the APS, some courses require you to have specific subjects in your matric. The prospectus is set in a table form, listing the course, the required APS, required subjects and exceptions. Using an index is always advisable. You can download Wits prospectus at https://prospectus.wits.ac.za
How to check Wits application status.
University of Witwatersrand (Wits) is one of the universities that use an online application system. It has a self-service process where prospective students can apply and choose the field of study of their choice. There is also an option to track one’s application process/status. These are the steps one need to follow to check their application progress.
Step 1: Visit the official Wits website at www.wits.ac.za, and you will land on the ‘Home’ page. On your upper left, there will be a tab for ‘Menu’; click on it.
Step 2: Click on ‘self-service’ then follow the prompts, or you can click ‘Study @ Wits’. Then choose application.
Step 3: You will be asked to fill in your Wits and password; use the one you were given upon sending your application. It is usually emailed to you a few minutes after starting your application process.
Step 4: After filling in the required information, you will be taken to a portal that tracks your application status and what is needed from your side (if there’s anything you need to do, like paying application fee).
